South Africa and Sweden Outkill the U.S.

The blame-America-firsters such as stupid white man Michael Moore try to depict the United States as a hotbed of murder and violence, but this time they're even wronger than usual.

South Africa is the world's bloodiest nation, The Economist notes, with a shocking 114.8 murders for each 100,000 people, compared to only six in the U.S. and two in Japan, according to Interpol.

More than 21,000 South Africans were killed last year, "worse than some war zones."

Other countries that outkilled the U.S. on Interpol's list aren't a surprise: Brazil, Russia, Botswana, Zambia, Angola.

But here's one that might startle you: Sweden, supposedly the land of granola-munching socialist peaceniks, had 10 murders for every 100,000 people. Yes, Sweden is branching out and is no longer just Suicide Central.

Maybe Stockholm will take a cue from our Second Amendment and allow its citizens the right to defend themselves from its out-of-control population of greasy-haired blond killers.

I'm sure Liechenstein outranks the US in murders as well, that is if there's 2 murders in the whole year, it will be equal to 6.6 murders out of 100,000 people considering their population is only 30,000. Same thing with Sweden, as they are only 8.9 million people, still a relatively small country. So be careful when trying to compare per capita between big countries (260 million and small countries 8.9 million). If there was a sniper killing 30 people in Stockholm, it would mean the number of deaths per capita in Sweden would rise 30x as much as in the US. How accurate would that be?
In addition, how about you compare the total number of deaths between countries of the same size, that will definetly be more relevant.

Very easy to just show one statistic and 'forget' to show another which may be more relevant...typical right-wing.

I'm not even going to comment on your last statement.

A23...nice try...it what it is.
Its funny that when they want to raise hell about 2nd amendment rights to bear arms the "progressives" always include the inner city bastard factories and democratic strongholds and voting blocks when they give their argument against guns,in their figures.

Patriot,

What difference do their murder rates make ?

Is it OK for us to have 20,000 murders per year so long as some other country has more ? That really doesnt make a very logical argument.
It seems to me that if we had 20,000 murders last year that should be judged totally independent of how many murders occur in Sweden last year.

By the way, this "leftist" as you like to call me totally supports our constitutional right to bear arms. Who knows when Bush is going to pass another patriot act that gives the govt even broader rights to attack us for no reason. With the evil assholes we have running our govt, you damn well better believe we NEED our right to bear arms.

Just wondering, do you support the patriot act? You know the act that has taken away several of our rights just as you fear your right to bear arms may be taken away. Do you support the Patriot act ? It was passed by a Republican - somehow I am sure you do support it.

Just one problem, Patriot -- the numbers for Sweden are false. Sweden has experienced way too much immigration from the Third World, but not enough to raise its murder rates to US levels.

quote:
But here's one that might shock you: Sweden, supposedly the land of granola-munching socialist peaceniks, had 10 murders for every 100,000 people.

Nope. The rate is less than 2 per 100,000.

According to the Swedish government

http://www.scb.se/publkat/Filer/A01SA0301_24.pdf
Annual murder totals in Sweden (with a population of 8.9 million) are no more than:

1997: 157
1998: 185
1999: 188
2000: 175
2001: 167

But these figures include manslaughter and deaths reported as murders but later found to have been deaths by natural causes, so the real number of murders is lower.

Go here to check Interpol's numbers, which agree with the Swedish government's:

http://www.interpol.int/Public/Statistics/ICS/downloadList.asp

For the last available year (2001), Sweden's murder rate was 1.87 per 100,000. Population is about 8.9 million.

You do the math.

And here's a heads-up for you, Patriot -- Newsmax is run by American-hating Leftists, so maybe you should look for your news elsewhere.

The problem is that genuine unselfish and patriotic impulses of "conservatives" are misdirected into dead ends by Leftists posing as conservatives. Newsmax is an example.

Are you guys telling me that English decent South Africans are killing each other at a rate of 114 per 100,000? No? Then why do you think it's much different in the US?

A2345exxx, I'm going to look up the murder rate in Brazil, a highly populated country.

No, Offshoreo, no one's telling you that South Africans of English (or Dutch) descent are killing one oanother at a rate of 114 per 100,000 per annum. The murder rate is mostly due to the majority (black) population.

"The problem is that genuine unselfish and patriotic impulses of "conservatives""

Could you expound? Modern day conservatives as we know them in a political sense tend to be much more in favor of limiting personal freedom for supposed security which is quite unpatriotic.

Great link Skyweasel, how true. Hopefully the misguided souls on the right will wake up before it's to late for all of us.

You'll need to define "conservative" -- there are few (if any) true conservatives in the government or in the upper ranks of either party. I used the term "conservative" because I figured that Patriot probably considers himself a conservative, and the unselfishness I referred to is based on an assumption on my part -- an assumption that he would fight for his country if necessary. The problem is that the socially valuable willingness to sacrifice for the community is manipulated so that "conservatives" like Patriot, as well as other Americans, wind up sacrificing for groups that they are not part of.

As for "Modern day conservatives as we know them", who are these people? Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo are imperfect

patriot,

abort thyself.

kidding. But seriously, it's dangerous to compare per capita vs. percentages: It makes Alaska look like a death camp if 5 people are murdered.
